Omega 2009 Professional Moonwatch was created to celebrate the famous 1957 Speedmaster Professional, also known as “Moonwatch”, the manual winding chronograph, made famous through its NASA designation to participate in the Apollo Program, and to be the first and still the only watch in history worn in outer space and on the moon.

      Omega’s 2009 Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apolo11 limited edition retains all the 1957 classic stylish touches which recreate the original look of the chronograph that landed on the Moon, and to make this even more appealing for its impassionate customers, the 2009 edition is powered by a movement identical to that of the original Moonwatch.

      The limited series of only 5,957 commemorative timepieces are made of stainless steel, and feature, as a special design touch a golden seahorse on the black dial; the tachymeter scale and the chronograph counters retain the genuine hand-winding 1957 Moonwatch’ DNA, and at the model’s core there is the notorious Calibre 1861 which accompanied its famous predecessor in zero gravity.

      Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 2009 has 42 mm polished stainless steel case and bezel, hour hands which have luminescent coating and black aluminum insertions in the tachymeter scale, the chronograph also has 12 hour and 30 minutes counters and a matching stainless steel bracelet which gives the it both elegance and robustness.

      The Moonwatch’ legend says that during the Apollo 13 dramatic mission this watch, built to withstand extreme outer space conditions like no gravity and extreme temperature held a crucial role, as the commander astronaut James Lovell relied on his Omega Speedmaster Professional when he fired the re-entry rockets, a procedure which required the precision of a fraction of a second and that was the key to the safe return to Earth of the spaceship and its crew. Due to its merits in the Apollo 13 mission, this chronograph was awarded in October 1970, with “Snoopy” – the highest NASA astronautic award, and moreover at the pinnacle of the Cold War it has been proven that, in space both Russians and Americans were wearing the same chronograph later proclaimed: “FLIGHT-QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS THE FIRST AND ONLY WATCH WORN ON THE MOON”.
